The holidays are a time of happiness and joy, but can also be a time of increased crime. Here are 5 tips to keep your home safe.

1. Lights are a burglars worst enemy. A well-lit property deters criminals and can be the most inexpensive form of security. Motion sensored security lights are particularly effective.

2. If you are headed out of town, have a neighbor check in every few days to make sure that no packages or fliers are left at your doorstep. Lingering packages are a huge red flag that you aren't home. You could also put a hold on your mail so it does not pile up. Also double check that you won't be receiving packages while away.

3. Get a dog, or at least a 'Beware of dog' sign. Dogs are a bother and many criminals will pass over a home with a dog, or at least a 'Beware of dog' sign.

4. Leave at least one interior light on while you are away. This signals that someone is indeed home. Better yet, get battery operated candles on a timer and place them near a window to give the illusion that someone is home.

5. Leave a car in the driveway or ask a neighbor to park their car periodically in your driveway while you are away. This will throw off any criminals and make them second guess targeting your property.

Hopefully these tips help you keep your home safe for the holidays!
